Our Eco Credentials

Sustainable Resources

Our resources are made from wood and compostable materials. We use a lot of recycled and up-cycled items to create engaging environments and toys, all wooden items are made from FSC-Certified wood.

Sourcing Local Food

We support local businesses and jobs by buying the produce we can’t produce on site ourselves locally. Not only does this ensure good quality, fresh ingredients for our snacks but it also helps to reduce our carbon footprint.

Growing our Own

Most of our fruit and vegetables for our snacks come from our very own vegetable patch here at the homestead. In doing this the children learn how food is grown and have the opportunity to pick it, prepare it, cook it and eat it.

Raising Animals

Our chickens and ducks provide us with fresh eggs every day, which we eat for breakfast with a slice of toast. The chickens also appreciate our fruit and vegetable scraps which significantly reduces our food waste.

Saving and Re-Using Waste Water

We collect used water from hand washing and pot washing and use it to water our vegetable patch and our flower gardens. We teach the children the importance of saving water where possible e.g. turning the tap off while we are applying soap to our hands.

Solar Power

We are off-grid! This means that we do not have access to mains electricity. Instead, we use solar energy from the sun to power our site. We would also like to harness wind power in the future.

Composting

Anything that can be composted, gets composted! Vegetable scraps, paper, cardboard, grass cuttings, etc. We then let these decompose. Overtime, this will create fresh compost to plant our fruit, vegetables and plants seeds in.

Eco-Friendly Toileting

The children here use toilets that support the environment by saving 1000’s of gallons of water each year.

It is hoped that we will use fully compostable toilets in the near future. With compost toilets the waste decomposes inside a chamber over time and the harmful bacteria neutralise and leave behind a compostable material that is safe and odour free. The compostable material can be used on non-edible plants away from the children’s play areas.
